I write comparative history — taking two events that look unrelated and placing them next to each other long enough to see what they say about a third. My beat is diplomatic and military history, specifically decision-making under uncertainty. I came to it from foreign-affairs reporting after I got tired of cycles that ended before the thesis could be tested.
